4 Quick Tooth Tips for New Parents

Begin an Oral Health Care Routine

Question: do you have to clean baby’s mouth if it has no teeth? Answer: YES! A baby’s first tooth doesn’t typically erupt until they are 8 months old, but it’s still important to keep their mouth clean. You can clean their gums by taking a damp cloth or gauze and gently rubbing it over their gums to remove any food debris. You may choose to use a very soft, baby toothbrush and lightly brush their gums using a very low amount of pressure to avoid upsetting their sensitive gums. However, a damp cloth works just as well.

Establish a Dental Home

Parents have to establish a dental home for their children before their first birthday. Usually, a child’s first tooth will appear between 6 and 10 months of age, which makes it the perfect time to choose a comfortable dental home for your child.

By choosing a pediatric dental home for your child, you get them the best oral care specifically designed for young teeth. A pediatric dentist will be able to diagnose any issues in your child’s smile, and provide you with the knowledge needed to help them achieve oral health success.

Incorporate Mouth Healthy Foods

Around ages 4- 6 months, most children are ready to begin eating some solid foods. You can take this opportunity to introduce them to some mouth-healthy foods that their body and developing smile will appreciate. Soft foods like bananas, cooked sweet potatoes and avocado are fantastic healthy foods for children beginning a solid diet.  Sweet potatoes are high in Vitamin-A, and support healthy teeth and gums, and avocados contain high amounts of Vitamin C, which contains folate – a mineral that combats gum disease.

Be Flexible

Your child’s mouth is going to evolve, and their oral health routine will need to adapt to fit their smile. As they age, be sure to replace their toothbrush when the bristles begin to plume and fray, and pick one with soft bristles that they can easily grab. Also, be sure to visit the pediatric dentist twice per year so that you can stay up-to-date on any changes in their smile that need to be treated.

Have a Dental Checkup Regularly

Providing the best dental care for your child is our top priority, and we would love to speak with you about your child and their dental needs. Establishing a dental home early is very important, so we suggest that you bring your toddler in right after their first tooth emerges. That way, we can craft a dental plan that will help them earn a healthy smile that lasts for life. We see children of all ages, so schedule an appointment with us online! We want to make visiting the dentist fun and easy for your child. Call us today to schedule an appointment, or a relaxing meet-and-greet.

How to look after braces and retainers

When your brace is fitted, your Total Orthodontics clinician will explain to you exactly how to look after it. It’s important that you regularly clean your teeth and your braces, to maintain their condition.

If you’ve got any questions about the ongoing care and maintenance of your braces, read on below:

How to look after fixed braces

Your fixed brace provides food and plaque with more places to hide, so you’ll need to be extra careful with your oral hygiene routine. You will need to brush after every meal to remove any small pieces of food that can get trapped in your brace.

You should be brushing your teeth three times a day. We recommend that you carry a toothbrush with you at all times, and use a fluoride mouthwash every evening to protect your teeth from decay.

If you don’t keep your teeth and brace clean, you can end up with permanent marking on your teeth – not what you want after all that time getting them lovely and straight!

We also recommend that you see a hygienist and your general dentist for regular check-ups throughout your treatment.

How to look after removable braces

Looking after removable braces is simple. Remove your brace carefully with gentle pressure, and when you are not wearing your brace keep it in its protective box.

To keep your removable brace, clean soak it in a retainer cleaning solution once a week. You can also clean it with a toothbrush and water, but don’t use toothpaste to clean your brace.

Please resist the temptation to play with your brace whilst you’re wearing it, as this may cause it to weaken and break. If you do experience any problems, make an appointment to see us as soon as possible, but in the meantime try to continue wearing your brace.

We will regularly assess your progress, but it’s also important that you continue to visit your general dentist for regular check-ups, to keep your smile in tip-top condition.

How to look after twin block braces

img3

To keep your twin block brace clean, soak both parts in a retainer cleaning solution once a week. You can also clean it with a toothbrush and water. Don’t use toothpaste to clean your brace.

Please avoid clicking your twin block brace in and out repeatedly as this will cause it to weaken and break. If you do experience any problems please make an appointment to see us as soon as possible. In the meantime try to continue wearing your brace.

How to look after fixed retainers

img4

It is important that you keep the areas around your fixed retainers clean. We recommend using an interdental brush or orthodontic dental floss to clean between your front teeth and underneath your fixed retainers. We also advise you to see your dentist or hygienist regularly for a professional clean.

When your retainers are not being worn, please keep them in their protective box. To keep your retainers clean, soak them in a retainer cleaning solution once a week for 20 minutes. You can also clean them with a toothbrush and water. Don’t use toothpaste to clean your retainers and don’t put them in hot water, as this may cause them to lose their shape.

5 Signs That Mean You Need to See Your Dentist

5 Signs That Mean You Need to See Your Dentist

12th April 2018| Espressotive

A smile is the facial expression that most engages others. With the help of the teeth — which provide structural support for the face muscles — the mouth also forms a frown and other expressions that show on your face. So teeth play an important role in our daily lives. It’s necessary to have regular checkups at the dentist every 6 months, for a professional cleaning and a thorough exam. However, don’t ignore red flags if you’re between appointments! Here are a few signs that might mean you need to come in and see us right away.img1

1.    Tooth Pain – Never ignore a toothache! If your teeth are feeling sensitive, it could be the first sign of a cavity or an abscessed tooth. If you’re suffering from persistent dental pain, then it’s important to have your tooth evaluated quickly. A dental cavity can grow larger, resulting in a bigger restoration If it’s an abscess, the pain will only get worse, so book an appointment at Dr parkers Dental Care and come see us.

2.    Grumpy Gums – Gums that are swollen, red and bleeding aren’t normal. Irritation that occurs when you brush and floss might be a symptom of periodontal disease. While bleeding gums can sometimes be a sign of overly enthusiastic oral hygiene habits, they need to be checked out at our dental clinic in Goa which has the best orthodontist in Goa to make sure that the bleeding is not a result of gum disease. We can recommend a proper treatment plan that will relieve your unhappy gum tissue and have your smile back.

3.    Too Much Tartar? - Unless you’re eating seafood, tartar in your mouth isn’t a good thing. If you’ve noticed hard, scaly deposits on the surface of your teeth, it’s time to come see us. Tartar buildup is actually oral bacteria growth that has calcified onto your teeth, which can lead to future tooth loss.

Why A Regular Dental Check Up Is Important

Why A Regular Dental Check Up Is Important

3rd February 2018| Espressotive

A regular dental check up is important because they help keep your teeth and gums healthy. You should have a regular dental visit at least every 6 months or as recommended by your dental professional.

How Often Should You Visit the Dentist

Along with daily home brushing/flossing routine, regular dental check-ups play an indispensible role in maintaining healthy teeth and gums. Indeed, twice-yearly visits to your dentist can minimise the occurrence of long-term dental problems and deal with immediate issues before they are allowed to develop further. Regular check-ups can catch the early warning signs of decay or infection, while professional cleaning by a trained clinician helps to get rid of any hard-to-remove plaque or tartar.

Why Dental Check Ups Are So Important

The problem we have is that many of us ignore the health of our mouth, especially when we compare it to our overall body health. We allow problems to develop before we actually visit the dentist.

1. Allowing gums to bleed

Allowing your gums to bleed helps create cavities and inflamed gums - pockets develop under the gum-line filled with bacteria that eat away the teeth and eventually the bone causing tooth loss. Visiting the dentist regularly can ensure your gum health is properly maintained and early treatment prevents serious problems developing.

2. Tooth pain

Tooth pain is most often caused by forming cavities. Once a cavity reaches the stage where it is causing pain then root canal treatment (or possibly tooth loss) is more likely, or an extensive filling. Regular check-ups ensure that the beginnings of a filling can be identified; treated and additional brushing routines are created.

If your are looking for best dental treatment in goa? Here is the solution for all dental related problems. Dr. Parker’s dental clinic is known for its best dental treatment in Goa.

My Braces Journey

My Braces Journey

6th December 2017| Espressotive

Hello , My name is Akshay Kamat. I am 22 years old. My braces journey has been a joy ride for me. As a kid, growing up was all about eating chocolates and playing with my teeth using my tongue. As a result,I had to extract two of my molars at a very young age and had all my teeth miss-aligned. My upper incisors were sticking out whereas my lower teeth over overlapping my upper teeth. I never believed it to be such a big deal until my friends and relatives started mentioning it. My teeth gave me a hard time doing bunch of things, like eating, smiling with my mouth wide open, going up on a stage to perform, talking and so on. I had to make sure my teeth weren’t visible while smiling or talking with people, I had to be very careful about that.

I am a singer and a composer. I have been Performing on stage since childhood, but ever since I realized I don’t have a perfect  set of teeth and the fact that they made me look kind of weird I’ve always had second thoughts about going up on stage. Even after getting harsh comments, I did not care much. I kept on ignoring it. But when it comes to dating or going out with friends, one really doesn’t want a smile or a face like that.

My college had just ended, I was a graduate. My job interviews were just around the corner. The first couple of interviews went well, but I did get a handful of gazes. It was then when I realized it was high time for me to do something about it. As the time went by I got subconscious and after a lot of thinking, I finally considered getting braces. But the question was how many teeth would I have to extract and how for how long would I have to have a weird iron in my mouth.I had my consultation first and I was quiet happy to know that I would have to extract only one teeth and the treatment period was just over a year.

It’s been 10 months now and I’m quiet happy with the kind of results I have got. I no longer have buck teeth, I can eat properly, I can now smile with my teeth showing, I can sing as well as I can smile while doing so, it has boosted my confidence. I do things I never did in my life, be it dating, uploading music videos on social media and a lot of important stuff. Really glad I could go through all this. It hurts like heck when u first start but it gets so much better and it is totally worth it and worth all the money you would spend!

All the credit goes to Dr. Karishma Parker , orthodontist in goa . I can’t thank her enough for giving me a new look. She really did change my life. I’m going to end by saying "A nice smile goes a long way and sets a deep first impression on others" . If you’re still thinking whether to put braces, I’d say granted with the financial capability to, why not! And those with braces on, Is totally worth it.
